GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Senior Sam Ashton recorded her 1,000th career assist during the Colonia High School girls volleyball team’s straight sets sweep of Monroe in Thursday’s Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament semifinals.

With the win, Colonia (17-6) advanced to the championship against East Brunswick, which will be contested at J.P. Stevens High School on Saturday at noon.

Ashton entered the semifinal needing 15 assists to reach the milestone and finished the match with 17 assists.

“Sam’s a great girl,” Colonia head coach Tom Hennessy said. “She’s everything you want in a player. She works hard. She listens. She’s very coachable, too. She gets to every ball. She never gives up. And she’s a great teammate. That’s the most important thing. She roots her team on more than herself.”

Hennessy scheduled several Top 20 foes – including Westfield, Union Catholic, North Hunterdon and Mount Olive – to ensure the Patriots would be battle-tested for a run to the conference tournament final.
