Los Gatos sports briefs


The Los Gatos High School varsity girls volleyball team defeated Lynbrook 26 -24, 13 -25, 25 -21, 20 -25, 15 – 9 on Oct. 23.

Alex Anthony and Ella Weider combined for a jaw-dropping 41 kills – Weider had 22 and Anthony had 19. Skyler McKinnon added nine kills, and Isabelle Issak added six kills. Adrina Tang passed for 51 assists in the victory.

Field Hockey

The Los Gatos High varsity team shut out Lynbrook 6-0 on Oct. 16. Eva Vrijen had a hat trick, and teammates Natalie Deck, Olivia Fox and Kaylee Kennedy each had one goal apiece. Vrijen also had two assists in the victory.

Four days later, the score was the same as Los Gatos beat Los Altos. Natalie Moore had two goals, with Lucy Dale, Olivia Fox, Maya Holton and Kennedy adding one apiece.

Los Gatos’ junior varsity team edged Lynbrook 1-0 on Oct. 16 on a first-period goal by Amelia Petroff off an assist by Rachel An. On Oct. 20, the Wildcats fell to Los Altos 3-0. Alaana Panu had four saves for Los Gatos, and Amelia Enns added two.

Cross Country

Tauren Mitchell, a sixth grader at Rolling Hills, set a meet record in the Santa Clara County Middle School Championships on Oct. 17 at Montgomery Hill Park.

In the 6th Grade Girls race, Mitchell was one of only two competitors to break 16 minutes on the 2.1 mile course. She won with a time of 13:51.5, a new meet record for sixth grade girls.


The City of Sunnyvale is looking for volunteer basketball coaches for the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League 2018 season which starts in January. The league is a recreational, non-competitive league for kindergarteners through eighth graders. Volunteer coaches should have some knowledge of basketball and can commit to two hours per week over the eight-week duration of the season and be over 18 years old. They must be able to run a one-hour practice each week on weekday evenings and coach a one-hour game on Saturdays. The season runs from January through mid-March. Hoopstarz basketball

Hoopstarz Basketball will hold fall classes for players ages 5-14. Sessions include co-ed camps for ages 8-14, Hoopgirlz camps (girls only) ages 5-14 and mini camps for ages 5-7.
